Fish
Lake Erie Economically
If you own your own boat it is a rewarding experience, you are the
captain and have the option of fishing when and where you want.
For many people, owning a boat is not an option for a variety of
reasons. And trying to justify owning a boat with the dollar value
of the fish you expect to catch in a season is a lesson in bad economics.

Single
Egg Presentations Crush Lake Erie Steelhead
This falls steelhead fishing in the Lake Erie tributaries was very
challenging in 2007 because the water was low and clear. Normally
this time of year a 1/32 oz jig in various colors tipped with a
couple of wax worms or maggots is all that is needed to make the
drag scream, but not this year! Light line, small hooks, stealthy
bobbers and single eggs have been the ticket this fall.

Get
Rid of the Nets
Most
Lake Erie sport fishermen in Ohio support the elimination of commercial
fishing. I’ve been writing for a year about why anglers want
the nets gone. Their reasons vary. Some believe the lake is too
fragile anymore to support netting. They want Lake Erie to be strictly
for sport fishing. Others are furious at the cheating that goes
on in the commercial industry and the recent convictions for taking
more fish than allowed.

Making
Walleye Lures
So, it’s
at this time of year that I start tying the hundreds of casting
harnesses and snelled hooks I will need over the course of 6-7 months
of walleye, smallie and perch fishing. I’ve started by placing
my orders for hooks, line, beads, blades and jig heads. I’ll
receive those supplies in about 7-10 days. In the meantime, I’m
using up what’s left of my ‘07 supplies.

LAKE
ERIE DEAD ZONE
I’ve
been studying up on the “Dead Zone.” No, not that sci-fi
television series; the one in Lake Erie. The one that has the news
media’s collective shorts in a wedgie. The one many recreational
fishermen hear about but don’t know much about. The one that
many think will doom the lake and turn it into a slimy cesspool.
I don’t subscribe to the cesspool notion, but there is genuine
cause for concern. Read

Carp has been introduced into both houses of congress.

Lake
Erie Reefs Walleye Spawn
The
early spring snap jig bite on Lake Erie has put it on the map as
the “Walleye Capital of the World” and for good reason.
About 80% of the lakes walleye population spawns on the south shore
in Ohio waters from the Lake Erie reefs just off of the Camp Perry
Firing range to Maumee Bay. These fish are schooled up and are easily
caught using a snap jigging method with a number of different lures.

River Run
As
winter comes to an end and the Great Lakes begin to thaw, nature
signals tens of thousands of walleye, some from Lake St. Clair and
some from the Western Basin of Lake Erie, to start their annual
migration to the place their life began: the Maumee River. The Maumee
boasts the largest population of migrating walleye east of the Mississippi
River. Read More...

New
York Steelhead
While
your hunting equipment may be cleaned and packed away for the season
there are a number of great fishing experiences out there. While
many anglers take to the ice to seek out panfish and walleye, the
true excitement and much bigger fish reside in the streams running
into Lakes Erie and Ontario.

Walleyes Take Ice Spoons
When the Walleye Capital of the World gets safe ice, top-notch ice
anglers turn to spoons to entice hungry eyes. That doesn’t
mean they won’t use a jigging rap, a blade bait or even a
minnow on a tip-up, it’s just that they know spoons will attract
and catch more fish consistently.

River Winter Perch Fishing
Does the weather this winter have you bummed out? Are you itching
to get some perch on the ice? Well, the next best thing to a pile
of jumbos lying on the hard water is a cooler full in the boat.
That’s right, some of the quickest action of the year can
be found during the winter months all over the state but, the open
water fishery at the mouth of the Detroit River can be spectacular
at times.

Need for a Boat in the Fall to Get That Trophy
When comparing the eyes of a walleye to the eyes
of other fish they are a bit odd looking, kind of glassy like a
marble. They get even stranger at night, especially when the light
hits them, they seem to glow. Walleye’s eyes have a unique
membrane, sort of like a cat’s eye, that allows them to capture
every bit of available light and then use it to see when other fish
cannot. This explains why some of the very best walleye fishing
happens at night.
